Clinical Associate Professor in Gastroenterology or Nutrition (full or part time) (MED215518)

The University of Nottingham invites applications for a Clinical Associate Professor in Gastroenterology/Nutrition related field. The person appointed will be expected to have a primary research commitment in conjunction with teaching and clinical service responsibilities. 

The job plan will encompass 5 University and 5 NHS programmed activities, provided at the Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH)  NHS Trust. The Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre (NDDC) provides a wide range of research opportunities in gastrointestinal and liver disorders including a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) specialising in these themes.

This post offers the opportunity to join the NDDC, one of the largest and internationally excellent divisions comprising academic gastroenterology, hepatology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery. The NDDC has 8 Professors, 7 clinical/ 2 non-clinical associate professors, 4 clinical lecturers, 13 research & teaching staff, 5 technical and 8 administrative staff within the Gastrointestinal and Liver Disorder Theme of the NIHR BRC. 

The BRC builds on the NIHR-Nottingham Biomedical Research Unit established in 2008 and the only NIHR-funded BRU focussed on GI, liver and pancreas-related areas to have sustained its funding and theme during the most recent NIHR funding cycle. The GI & Liver Disorder theme is the largest of the five themes included in the NIHR-Nottingham BRC funded £23.6M for early translational programme of research for the period 2017-22. 

The major purpose of this appointment is to expand the critical mass of ‘world leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’ research performed within the NDDC and GI & Liver Disorder Theme of NIHR-Nottingham BRC that has ‘GI & Liver Infections (C difficile, Viral Hepatitis and H pylori)’, ‘Disorders of GI Physiology & Liver Metabolism’ and ‘Innovative Methodologies’ as priority Research Areas. 

The successful candidate is expected to have strengths in translational research in one of the research areas of the NDDC and the GI & Liver Disorders theme of the NIHR-Nottingham BRC. In particular, they will bring existing research strengths to devise, and undertake, their own research programme developing novel therapeutic and preventative strategies within their specialist field of interest. In addition, the person appointed will deliver excellent care to patients through the Gastroenterology/ Hepatology/ Nutrition/ Endoscopy Services of the Division of Surgery at the NUH NHS Trust and contribute to the development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the School of Medicine, UoN 

The person appointed will be required to devote the whole of their time to the duties of the post and give them priority at all times; the proportion of the time committed to the clinical services will be proportionate to the design of the clinical academic position and specified in the job plan in discussion with the School of Medicine, UoN and NUH.
