Description :

We are looking to recruit a multiscale mathematical modeller to develop new multiscale mathematical models to understand how plants and soil interact. You will be joining an interdisciplinary team of 8 experimental and mathematical researchers with an excellent publication record and funding from ERC, BBSRC and EPSRC. The head of the group has an excellent record in supporting PDRAs in obtaining personal early career fellowships from the Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, EPSRC, Leverhulme Trust, Royal Commission 1851 etc.

This post is fixed term until 30/08/2020.

Main roles and responsibilities

We are looking for an applied mathematician or engineer who is familiar with multiscale homogenisation theories and associated computational techniques with experience in implementing numerical simulations in 3D. The aim of the project is to combine multiscale modelling of two fluid flow (water and air) with the flow of multiple solutes that are undergoing binding reactions in the fluid phase whilst simultaneously accounting for all biotic effects such as microbial biodegradation, plant solute uptake and/or exudation and biophysical effects.

What do they need to do the role successfully

To be successful you will need a track record of producing peer reviewed publications. You will hold a PhD or equivalent in applied mathematics or computational modelling (or other numerate subject) and you need to be familiar with homogenisation theory and associated numerical techniques. The knowledge of Comsol Multiphysics and/or OpenFoam for 3D simulations would also be useful, but not necessary, provided you can demonstrate that you would be able to acquire these skills in fast and efficient manner.

About the University

The University of Southampton is an institution in the top one per cent of world universities* and one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive universities.  We have an international reputation for research, teaching and enterprise.

About the Faculty

You will join a leading Engineering Faculty with an excellent record of collaborative research with industry and academic institutions in the UK and abroad.  In September 2013 an Athena SWAN Bronze award was received in recognition of our continued commitment to improving equality for women in science and engineering.

The Faculty offers exceptional research facilities in the areas of fluids, structures and their interactions, including a new world-class fluid dynamics facilities complex in the Boldrewood Engineering Campus, complete with a 138m towing tank.
