Description :

The School of Mathematics and Physical Sciences is a large and vibrant school within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Academics working within its three main subject areas, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry are highly regarded for their excellence in research and teaching. The school has a history of securing funding from research council sources and is very successful in collaborating and working with industry on a wide range of projects.

A project development officer is required to carry out the further development of a new memory technology that is based on memristor devices. Memristor (or resistive memory) is a new type of non-volatile memory that is seen as a potential candidate for the replacement of Flash and SDRAM memory. More recently it has been discovered that these devices can also be used as artificial synapses in neuromorphic computing  applications. The role is a fixed term appointment with the duties being carried out on a part-time basis (20 hrs/week).

The main role of the development officer is to optimize the switching properties of a new type of memory device. This will involve the deposition and characterization of thin-film materials, fabrication of devices, electrical testing and device optimization. The work will involve the writing of reports and may involve travel to carry out some of the experimental work.

The ideal candidate should have an PhD/MSc (or equivalent, or near completion) in Physics, Electronics, Materials Science, or a closely related subject with experience in material/device characterization and/or cleanroom fabrication techniques and a good understanding of the device physics.

Please upload a CV and covering letter.  In your covering letter please refer directly to the criteria, given in the person specification.  Applications are assessed by the selection panel according to these criteria.
