Description :

Are you an experienced and ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Are you interested in high speed rail? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive Universities?

The recently launched Institute for High Speed Rail and System Integration (IHSRSI) is a dedicated centre of excellence for high speed rail technologies that will benefit the UK and global high speed railway industry. This project concerns the development of the Vehicle Test Facility which consists of a full scale rolling rig, capable of 400 km/h operation along with excitation due to representative track design geometry and rail irregularity data.

Working closely with our rail industry collaborators and equipment suppliers, your work will be focussed on the development of the detail design of the Vehicle Test Facility. This will embrace elements of the servo-hydraulic actuation system, used to excite the vehicle, the electrical drive system, used to generate/react the tractive forces present at the wheel-rail interfaces along with the data acquisition and control system. Your work will also explore and quantify the trade-offs present between performance and cost within the overall design concept. The work will include the design and engineering of new or adapted components, systems and hardware to enable secure installation and effective operation of the Vehicle Test Facility. Computer based simulation and analysis will play an important role in the characterisation of the Vehicle Test Facility.

You will have a strong background in automotive/rail technology along with the design and development of related apparatus and instrumentation. You will have good knowledge of generic programming tools such as MATLAB/Simulink and LabView as well as more specialist CAD software such as SolidWorks and Abaqus. You will also have an enthusiastic, creative approach to your work and thrive on working within a team of colleagues drawn from academia and industry.
