Project DescriptionThe project seeks to use and develop new photochemical transformations to rapidly build complex and useful fine chemicals. Replacing toxic, hazardous and expensive reagents/catalysts with photons necessarily improves sustainability, reduces waste and removes any risk to a supply chain arising from an increase in demand for a give metal or political instability.  

The project draws on our experience in developing flow and photochemical methods for the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients and chemical scaffolds. It also benefits from the expertise of collaborators in The Universities of Caen and Rouen with whom there may be opportunities for exchange visits to develop projects of mutual interest and benefit. The PhD is part of wider European Regional Development Fund sponsored collaboration, LabFact, that aims to strengthen Cross-Channel academic and industry partnerships in synthetic organic chemistry for the benefit of our region. Its primary aim is to develop clean routes to fine chemicals and useful chemical scaffolds using sustainable techniques that minimise the use of chemical reagents.  Funding Notes

The project is funded for 3 years and welcomes applicants from the UK/EU who have or expect to obtain at least an upper second class degree in Chemistry or another relevant discipline.  

Funding will cover fees and a stipend at current research council rates of £14,777 per annum (201819). Due to funding restrictions, this position is only open to UK/EU applicants who meet the RCUK eligibility requirements.
