Job summary and purpose:

The main responsibility of the post holder will be the development and implementation of new algorithms for real-time video processing, video communication, and interactive multimedia applications. In addition, the post holder is expected to contribute in research activities towards video coding, video communication, compressed domain video content processing and content understanding.

Main responsibilities and activities:

Manage and drive and have a negotiable degree of direct involvement in the collection of data from the field as well as responsibility for managing the inputs from other partner organizations Liaising closely and regularly with other members of the research group at Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) and with the European investigators in the CONTENT4ALL project. Produce materials for project deliverables, dissemination of the results of the project at scientific meetings Contribute to research project proposals  Conduct independent research to support project dissemination plans Supervise undergraduate/postgraduate students

Post holder must have:

A doctoral degree in a relevant discipline (although individuals who have almost completed a doctoral degree may be appointed). Considerations may also be given to individuals who do not hold a doctoral degree but have required skills based on a number of years of experience in specified/relevant fields. An excellent mathematical and programming background related to media processing, communications or telecommunications Experience in C/C++ programming, python, and developing video streaming applications Knowledge and experience in working with video coding, and processing tools such as ffmpeg, gstreamer etc., Sound knowledge and experience in video coding standards H.264, HEVC, AV1 and new emerging standards such as VVC Experience in working with national/international collaborative research projects Knowledge in signal processing techniques for  video coding, video processing and compressed domain video processing Excellent scientific writing skills and a high proficiency in English Strong interpersonal skills

Desirable skills:

Basic understanding in machine learning techniques and application of these for multimedia communication domain, including areas such as video coding, data compression

Post holder must be

Willing and able to travel internationally Able to work independently Able to operate efficiently in an interdisciplinary and international research team

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£30,688) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£31,604).
