Description :

The Humber Estuary is rich in bird life and is a site of international importance for migratory wildfowl and waders. However, it is also a highly dynamic and industrialised landscape, and thus presents a mix of risks, challenges and benefits to the birds that use it. Conversely, the presence of resident and migratory birds along the estuary raises issues for industrial development and, potentially, human and livestock health. In partnership with the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA), we share an ambition to create a new, vibrant research community with an explicit focus on bird ecology and behaviour in order to answer pure and applied questions regarding the use of the landscape by birds and interactions with human interests. Central to the work programme is the appointment of a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) in Applied Ornithology.

The PDRA will manage a project to investigate how bird migration is evaluated in Great Britain, using a mobile bird detection radar, acoustic sensors and a mobile laboratory at sites on the Humber Estuary. The project requires collaborative fieldwork at remote sites outside normal working hours and demands highly developed field project management skills and strong team working skills. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic, postdoctoral applied ornithologist with sound experience of field data collection, management, analysis and reporting. The post holder will be responsible for project management and delivery, day-to-day management of a related programme of fieldwork involving the bird radar, representing the research team at meetings and conferences, producing publishable research outputs and assisting with writing funding bids.

The ideal candidate will also be expected to assist with some undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; this will normally involve attending field days and lab classes, but occasional assistance with specialist courses will also be required.

The project will be based at the University of Hull with frequent fieldwork conducted along the Spurn peninsula, often outside of normal working hours.

The PDRA will receive close supervision from the Principal Investigator and direction from a team of senior academic colleagues and will have access to academic, pastoral support and guidance including specific training, career counselling and mentoring.
