Research Associate/Senior Research Associate (CorCenCC) (A2388)

We are seeking a research associate or senior research associate to work on the ESRC/AHRC-funded project “Corpws Cenedlaethol Cymraeg Cyfoes – the National Corpus of Contemporary Welsh (CorCenCC)”: (http://www.corcencc.org/) 

The CorCenCC project is creating a major language resource for Welsh speakers, Welsh learners, Welsh language researchers, and indeed anyone who is interested in the Welsh language.  Multiple language samples are being gathered from real-life communication, and presented in a searchable online corpus, allowing users to explore Welsh as it is actually used.

Working with other project partners at Cardiff, Swansea and Bangor Universities, Lancaster’s major responsibility is to create a Welsh semantic tagger based on the UCREL Semantic Analysis System (USAS) framework already created for English and many other languages. We are developing a Natural Language Processing (NLP) system for Welsh incorporating semantic dictionaries and a bespoke part-of-speech tagger (CyTag) created at Cardiff, and new contextual semantic disambiguation methods in order to facilitate more accurate automatic language processing for Welsh. Native speaker input will be provided by colleagues at partner universities.

We invite applications from enthusiastic individuals with experience in relevant aspects of Computer Science, NLP and computational linguistics or an appropriate, related discipline. The role will require you to engage with a large group of external partners and stakeholders, and therefore you should possess excellent communication skills and demonstrate evidence of working effectively within a team.
