Description :

Applications are sought from candidates working in Algebra and Geometry, broadly understood, with a proven track record of publishing research of international quality. You should demonstrate a clear potential for attracting research funding and for being a capable and enthusiastic contributor to the Department’s undergraduate programmes.

This is an exciting time to join our thriving Pure Mathematics section, comprising 8 professors, 6 readers or senior lecturers and 11 lecturers. Lancaster is one of the UK’s top departments in Mathematics and Statistics, ranked 5th overall in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, and 3rd for the impact of its research. Lancaster University was awarded a Gold rating in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework and is the 2018 Times and Sunday Times University of the Year.

Research in Pure Mathematics at Lancaster is organised into four interconnected groups: Algebra and Geometry, Analysis, Discrete Mathematics and Geometric Rigidity, and Probability. The Algebra and Geometry group has researchers working across a wide range of areas, including homological and homotopical algebra, deformation theory, Lie theory, noncommutative geometry, group theory, representation theory and combinatorics. We are seeking someone whose research interests complement existing strengths.

The Department provides an environment which aims to meet the individual needs of each member of staff. All new lecturers are provided with mentoring and support, and have a reduced teaching and administrative load for the first three years. We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies, and seek to promote a healthy work-life balance. The University is a charter member of Athena SWAN and has held a Bronze award since 2008, in recognition of good employment practice to address gender equality in higher education and research. The Department achieved its own Athena SWAN Bronze award in 2017 and is a registered supporter of the London Mathematical Society’s Good Practice Scheme.

Informal enquiries may be made to the Head of Department, Dr Alexander Belton (a.belton@lancaster.ac.uk) or the Group Lead for Algebra and Geometry, Dr Nadia Mazza (n.mazza@lancaster.ac.uk).

This is a full time indefinite post and is available from 1st January 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
