Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Behavioural Analytics (A2387)

Improvements in the scale and accuracy of technologies that measure human behaviour (e.g., smartphones, social sensors, motion tracking, text analysis) have made it possible to test hypotheses and develop applications that were previously beyond reach. At Lancaster our research in the domain of security has benefited from such methods. Examples include the use of EEG to study correlates of deception, virtual reality to study cross-cultural interviewing, motion tracking to study nonverbal mimicry, social sensors to measure embodied emotions, eye-tracking to measure online risk taking, and corpus-linguistics to study the development and maintenance of trust in undercover policing.

To further develop this strength, Security Lancaster—the University’s cross-faculty Institute for security and protection sciences—is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Behavioural Analytics (the equivalent of Assistant Professor) whose research is at the forefront of using analytic methods to tackle fundamental questions about behaviour and security. We welcome applications from candidates who have contributed to any area of psychology, cognitive science or computational social science, so long as they have a vision for how to develop and utilise these methods and technologies to answers key questions in their field. Alongside being a member of Security Lancaster, you will be an academic staff member of the Department most relevant to her or his expertise.

You will have, or be close to receiving, a PhD and a strong track record of research that complements our strengths and connects them with other areas of excellence within the University. You should be keen to develop innovative teaching in this area and be interested in interdisciplinary collaborations. Experience of translating research into practice and policy recommendations for law enforcement and the security and intelligence agencies will be an advantage.
