The Centre for Additive Manufacturing within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham are searching for an exceptional individual for the role of Transitional Assistant Professor working within a prestigious EPSRC “Programme Grant” (EP/P031684/1). The role holder will work within a multi-institution, multidisciplinary team which spans both basic/applied sciences and engineering and involves collaborations of three partner universities (Nottingham, Birmingham, Warwick) and eight industrial partners (AstraZeneca, AWE, Defence Science & Tech Lab DSTL, Nanoscribe GmbH, Oce Technologies, Pfizer, Rogers Corporation, Texas Instruments Inc). Additionally, the project will collaborate with the National Physics Laboratory (UK), Lawrence Livermore National Labs (US) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (DE).

Initially focusing on novel electronic and pharmaceutical/healthcare applications, the research team aims to move beyond single material AM by exploiting the potential to deposit multiple materials contemporaneously for the delivery of spatially resolved function and structure in three dimensions (3D). To advance multifunctional Additive Manufacturing to full acceptance by industry, it is necessary to take a bottom up approach. This requires a full understanding of the interaction between the chemistry, physics and mechanics of the materials and processes. This Programme Grant seeks to develop that understanding through theoretical, computational and practical approaches that focus on the behaviour at the interfaces, and how this can form discrete surfaces or can result in interphases and crucially, what impact that has on the properties, and how we can use this understanding to create control.

This will be an exciting and well-resourced project which aims to establish controlled next generation multifunctional AM and translate this to industry and researchers. 

Over the course of 5 years, the post will transition from a researcher role (100% in first year), to a full-time academic position (100% in the 5th year). Over 5 years, there will be a carefully managed staged contribution to the Faculty's excellent reputation in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, and assistance with the administration of the Faculty. It is expected that the eventual permanent Assistant Professor role will be based within the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering.

This post is designed to provide Early Career Researchers with the platform to build a research career, receiving support and mentoring from leading academics and having access to the world leading laboratory in Additive Manufacturing at the University of Nottingham. At the end of the 5 years, the successful candidate will have established an internationally recognised research profile and set the basis for a high-flying research career.
