Description :

Applications are invited for a 3-year full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) position on the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council-funded project: "Fast solvers for frequency domain wave scattering problems and applications".

This project is concerned with the formulation, analysis, implementation and applications of fast solvers for partial differential equations arising in acoustic, electromagnetic and elastic wave problems, modelled in the frequency domain. We will be particularly concerned with parallel domain decomposition methods for solving the large ill-conditioned linear systems that arise from typical applications, especially in seismic inversion and in electromagnetics.

The EPSRC funding provides for the appointment of two linked PDRAs, one at Bath and one with our partners at Strathclyde University (Glasgow).

The Bath PDRA will principally be concerned with the formulation and analysis of domain decomposition methods for frequency-domain wave problems, and their implementation on applications from seismic inversion or electromagnetics using the public domain software FreeFEM++. This will be done in collaboration with Professor Graham and Drs Spence and Gazzola at Bath. There will be opportunities for collaboration with Dr. Dolean (PI at Strathclyde), and the Strathclyde PDRA, as well as a number of international resarchers who will visit Bath and Glasgow during the project.

The post carries no teaching or administrative duties. Funds are available under the project for attending conferences and making appropriate research visits.

The successful candidate will have, or will be nearing the completion of, a PhD in Numerical Analysis, Scientific Computing or equivalent. The knowledge and experience of working in the areas of acoustic, electromagnetic, or elastic waves and their applications would be an added advantage. Candidates should attach a full curriculum vitae and a list of publications to their application.

This post is fixed-term for 3 years. The start date will be on or after 1st January 2019 by mutual agreement. However, for successful candidates who wish to start earlier, we may be able to offer funding as a visitor for an initial period.

Informal enquiries are very welcome and can be made to Professor Ivan Graham (I.G.Graham@bath.ac.uk).

The interviews with short-listed candidates are likely to take place on 6/7 November.

Closing Date: 12 Oct 2018
Type: Education & Research
