Description :

We are seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant for a fixed-term appointment for 8 months working on a project funded by the STFC Newton Agritech in China Partnership Programme led by the University of Hull (UoH) and in collaboration with researchers from the University of Loughborough and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). The aim of this project is to develop novel an accurate, low cost, operational UAV-based remote sensing approach for the detection of yellow rust infection in Winter Wheat in China by integrating the capabilities of a VNIR hyperspectral imaging system with those of a UAV-mounted Imaging FTIR developed by the UoH and RAL.

The key objective of the post holder will be the integration of a VNIR Hyperspectral Imaging Instrument with a newly designed Imaging Fourier Transform InfraRed Spectrometer (MicroFTS) into an operational system capable of detecting yellow rust infection. This project will seek to demonstrate the capability of this integrated system to provide rapid, accurate detection of the initial stages of crop infection and precision mapping of the extent of contamination at field scales

The post holder will take a leading role in the development of the integrated UAV-based Imaging system and the processing of the datasets acquired in the field. The post-holder will be expected to work collaboratively with staff from RAL and the University of Loughborough. The principal duties of the post are related to the development of the MicroFTS instrument to enhance the operational performance. The post holder will also have to develop a vegetation disease identification software package utilising the capabilities of the integrated hyperspectral dataset. The project will involve a number of field data acquisition campaigns in the UK and China.
