Description :

You will provide specialist technical / consultancy support on noise and vibration control projects as part of the product development process, particularly for automotive and marine applications.  Initially you will gain experience by working on projects negotiated and planned by Senior Consultants who are specialists in particular business areas.

While the position will be focused on the automotive and marine industries the consultancy group works on a wide and diverse range of projects, providing an excellent opportunity to gain experience in many different fields.  An important function of the Unit is to provide a path for ‘technology transfer’ from the research groups of the Faculty, especially the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, to industry and government bodies, and so interest and involvement in these research activities is encouraged.

A graduate in mechanical engineering, acoustics or related disciplines, you will have experience in experimental work, but an interest in numerical modelling work will be an advantage.  A key requirement is a good understanding of the mechanisms of noise generation, transmission and control and an ability to use this in resolving engineering problems.  Proven communication skills both verbal and written are a must as there will be close collaboration with clients.  Some industrial or consultancy experience would be advantageous, especially from the automotive industry. PhD or equivalent professional qualification and experience is required for the Consulting Engineer role.

Upon successful appointment the job titles awarded will be Enterprise Fellow for the Level 4 position or Technician for the Level 3 role. Please see the job descriptions attached for the different roles and pathways advertised.

Informal enquiries should be made to Simon Roberts, ISVR Consulting, University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton SO17 1BJ. Tel: +44 (0)23 8059 3312, or email simon.roberts@soton.ac.uk.
