Description :

Fixed term appointment of up to 12 months, with a possible extension

Applications are invited for a Research Fellowship in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The project, funded by the European Research Council, involves the design, synthesis and preparation of materials supporting long-lived hyperpolarized states, for applications in chemistry, biology and medicine. The project is based on some new methodological concepts which we expect to give rise to novel experimental possibilities. The postdoctoral fellowship will support the design and understanding of these materials and associated experiments by theoretical and computational techniques.

The candidate must have a PhD in either Physics or Chemistry or a related field. Knowledge of the theoretical principles of nuclear magnetic resonance is essential. Experimental experience of NMR is desirable. Experience in molecular dynamics simulations, quantum chemistry calculations, and spin-dynamical calculations is desirable. Experience in the theory and simulation of NMR relaxation phenomena is desirable. Experience of advanced NMR techniques, including pulse programming, is also desirable. The candidate must also be prepared to spend a small fraction of the time helping supervise student research.

The successful candidate will be part of the Magnetic Resonance Section at the Department of Chemistry of Southampton University. The Section has a well equipped NMR facility including one 700MHz, three 600MHz, one 500MHz, two 400 MHz and a 300 MHz spectrometers. A variety of probes allow liquid-state and solid-state experiments as well as micro-imaging and cryogenic experiments. The section offers wide expertise that spans from theory of spin dynamics to NMR methodology in solid and liquid state, microfluidics NMR, biomolecular NMR in liquid and solid state and NMR at cryogenic temperatures. An in-house mechanical workshop service is available.

Informal enquiries should be made to Prof Malcolm H Levitt (mhl@soton.ac.uk), University of Southampton. The start date is 1st of October 2018 with an initial appointment for 1 year. Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae and the names of three referees who have been former supervisors/colleagues.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
