The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS), the home of the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) at the University of Surrey, is looking to recruit a research fellow in 5G Communication Systems for Connected Cars for an initial period of up to 12 months. The post holder will work on a collaborative research project to help the specification and design of the next generation of V2X connectivity technologies.

ICS the world's largest academic research institute dedicated to the next generation of mobile network technology and has attracted over £70M of support to date. The 5GIC has unparalleled expertise in system research, covering all layers of communication systems. It also benefits from excellent research infrastructure, including a large-scale outdoor mobile test-bed, which is one of only a handful of such facilities worldwide. The 5GIC is an international hub for telecommunication research and innovation. It works in close partnership with a consortium of over 50 industry members including key ICT service providers, network and device manufacturers and test equipment solution providers to develop innovative solutions and standards for 5G networks.

They will join a dynamic team of researchers working in the area of the next generation of wireless communication systems, where, you they design and analyse ultra-low-latency and highly reliable communication systems for connected autonomous cars applications. All team members are expected to participate in a range of scholarly activities, including: high quality scientific publications, supervision of PhD and MSc students and with the dissemination of the project's outputs. There is also a huge opportunity to expand your professional network with industry and other leading universities that ICS has strong collaborations with.

The successful candidates should hold a PhD (degree) in Computer Science, Electrical (Electronic) Engineering or related areas from a well-known institution. The candidate is expected to have good track record of publications, proven problem solving and analytical skills, to be proactive, to engage with other researchers and to be self-motivated. Sufficient proficiency in programming is expected with experience in C++ and the use of simulation tools such as MATLAB, NS2/3 and/or OPNET; knowledge of OAI would be a benefit. Capability to effectively work within research teams and also individually with minimum supervision. Strong written and oral presentation skills in English. The researcher will also be responsible for liaising with other project partners in related areas, attending project meetings/telcos and making contribution to technical deliverables. Research experience on 5G new air interface technologies and familiarity with different access technologies (e.g., WAVE, LTE-V, NB-IOT) will be an added merit.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate.  Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1.
