Research Fellow in Machine Learning

We are seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Data and Knowledge Engineering Group within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Surrey. The post is for a full-time researcher for up to 12 months term with a possible extension subject to future funding.

The researcher will join a multidisciplinary group working on the Internet of Things, data analytics and machine learning for healthcare and smart cities. The group’s research in this domain is currently funded by the Department of Health/NHS, industry and the European Commission.

The researcher will be working with Professor Payam Barnaghi and his colleagues in related projects. The group has a strong track record in the Internet of Things (IoT), semantic technologies, data analytics and machine learning and also has significant research experience in application development and use-cases in healthcare and smart cities. The university has state-of-the-art research facilities such as large-scale experimental test-beds, including an IoT for dementia test-bed and a clinical living lab for the development and evaluation of the technology solutions. You will join an established research group within a strong track record and excellent computing and software infrastructure for first class research.

This role will contribute to the design and implementation of data analytics and machine learning solutions for analysing Internet of Things data. The group has a strong focus on impactful research and has been leading some of the AI and machine learning work in highly impactful research such as TIHM for Dementia (https://www.sabp.nhs.uk/tihm) and IoTCrawler (https://iotcrawler.eu) projects.

You should hold a PhD in electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or similar area. You will be responsible for designing and developing new techniques for analysing real-time IoT data sources (including healthcare, in-home sensory data and smart city data), to extract actionable information for healthcare and/or smart city applications. You should have good experience in machine learning, time-series data analytics and probabilistic methods. You are expected to develop your solutions in Python or in some cases in MATLAB. You will work with the project teams, attending the meetings and providing support to the projects.

Experience of Python and MATLAB and key machine learning toolkits/frameworks would be desirable.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate.  Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1.
