Description :

The Department of Sociology invites applications for a Research Fellow to join the ‘Eurostudents’ project, funded by the European Research Council (see www.eurostudents.netfor further details). The project explores the different ways in which higher education students are constructed across six European nations, and runs until July 2021.

As the majority of the project data has already been collected, this post focuses largely on data analysis (initially of student focus group data, but later the integration of data from staff interviews, policymaker interviews, institutional websites, policy documents and media texts) and the writing up of findings for different audiences. The post-holder will also be expected to contribute to other project activities such as the organisation of seminars, conferences and advisory group meetings.

The successful candidate will have a doctorate in a relevant topic area, and experience of analysing qualitative data and writing for academic audiences. S/he will also have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team and, ideally, knowledge of one or more of the national higher education systems covered by the project (in Denmark, England, Germany, Ireland, Poland and Spain). Familiarity with the software package NVivo would also be advantageous.

We are keen for the successful candidate to start as soon as possible.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£31,302) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate.  Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£32,236).

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Rachel Brooks r.brooks@surrey.ac.uk
