Teaching Fellow in Dance and Movement (071618)

Guildford School of Acting (GSA) is situated within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and is one of the UK’s leading conservatoires for specialised and intensive vocational training and innovative performance research. Established in 1935, GSA enjoys national and international renown as a leading conservatoire for performer training. We are arguably the world’s leading centre of excellence for musical theatre training and as part of the University of Surrey delivered the first academic dance degree in the UK. GSA has a diverse and vibrant community of performers, performance makers, creative practitioners and technicians graduating from its vocational training and research-led programmes each year.

We are currently looking for a Full-Time Teaching Fellow to join the Department of Dance, Choreography & Movement on a fixed-term contract to oversee and lead the delivery of contemporary dance/somatic practices, Laban and movement analysis. You will teach across several programmes including BA Dance, BA Acting, MA Acting and BA Actor-Musician.

As a dynamic teacher and practitioner, you will contribute to the ongoing development of dance practice at Surrey; the engagement of dance with other disciplines, notably theatre acting and movement direction; and collaboration with appropriate external partners (Professional Training Year) with a view to sustaining and enhancing Surrey’s authority in this field.

You will have experience of working with students/learners, and specialist skills in movement analysis, Laban and the facilitation and teaching of contemporary/classical dance practices along with a strong background in movement. Knowledge and experience of working with the actor and an understanding of the actor's physical needs will be highly valued. 

Experience in choreography, Pilates, and an understanding of movement fundamentals- Feldenkrais, Alexander, Roth will also be an advantage. The post involves academic administration and it is anticipated that you will convene modules across GSA academic and performance programmes.  You will work alongside colleagues in the Dance department and more widely in GSA and join a thriving creative community, working with inspiring colleagues and students. You will contribute to academic management within the GSA, and provide relevant perspectives on learning & teaching practices, and contemporary fields of performance/production and scholarship.
