Description :

The University of Hull is driven by a strong commitment to delivering excellent research, undergraduate and postgraduate education and a fantastic student experience. The University has an international outlook, global reach, and plays an important place-based regional role. There continues to be significant investment in the single-site campus, which ranks among the finest in the UK and enjoys a particularly rich cultural offer. Providing an exceptional student experience, underpinned by intellectual endeavour, discovery and achievement, is key to ensuring that our students emerge with the enriched skills and knowledge to meaningfully contribute to the global society and economy at the highest levels. The new facilities reflect contemporary professional environments, helping to ensure that our students are successful in securing graduate-level employment. The University is evolving to meet the needs of local, national and international students, collaborators, and external partners. Under the leadership of the new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Susan Lea, the University is entering a period of exciting strategic change. To strengthen its leadership, the University now wishes to appoint a new Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, who will be a full member of the University Leadership Team.

The Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering will take over leadership of a £40 million Faculty comprising three subject groupings: Engineering and Computer Science; Biological, Geographical and Environmental Sciences; and Mathematics and Physical Sciences. The Faculty is also home to successful research centres specialising in, for example, astrophysics and advanced materials. The new Dean will be expected to raise performance and achieve consistency of practice across the Faculty, to ensure excellent experiences and outcomes for students and staff in a vibrant and connected culture of education, research and enterprise. Priorities will include leading the development of market-driven programmes that recruit high-quality students, increasing and diversifying income streams, modernising ways of working, and generating a sense of common purpose in alignment with the University strategy. This is an opportunity to shape an area of the University’s activity that includes key targets for strategic investment.

The role reports directly to the Vice-Chancellor. Candidates should be academic leaders, ideally of professorial standing, who will bring a collegiate, enthusiastic and team approach to the role. This is an exceptional opportunity to make a significant and collaborative contribution to the University Leadership Team.
