Description :

HyFiSyn (Hybrid   Fibre-reinforced composites: achieving Synergetic effects through microstructural design and advanced simulation tools) is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 Programme. The HyFiSyn network is employing a number of Early Stage Researchers around Europe, including in the Composites Research Group at the University of Nottingham.

HyFiSyn aims to use fibre-hybridisation to maximise the potential of fibre composite materials and to change the current manufacturing-microstructure paradigm to a microstructure-manufacturing paradigm. Within HyFiSyn, this project will develop the manufacture of aligned discontinuous hybrid fibre mats and will involve experimental investigations to fundamentally understand and optimise the alignment process; to establish the effect of commingling of different fractions of two or more discontinuous reinforcement fibres; to adapt the alignment process to yield the desired microstructure; and to understand the capabilities for the use of recycled fibre in hybrid architectures.

HyFiSyn will involve original and impactful research supported by secondments that will give the successful candidates significant insights and exposure to research and innovation in both academia and industry. The successful candidate will register for a PhD at the University of Nottingham and will carry out the majority of research in the Faculty of Engineering. The successful candidate will also undertake two secondments during the project.

Requirements

Candidates will be required to meet the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher eligibility criteria: (http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/wp/2016_2017/main/h2020-wp1617-msca_en.pdf). In particular, at the time of appointment candidates must have had less than four years full-time equivalent research experience and must not have already obtained a PhD. Additionally, they must not have resided in the (host country) UK for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the appointment.

The applicant will also be expected to have a first or upper second class honours (or equivalent) undergraduate degree in science, engineering or a related discipline.

This full-time post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 36 months.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Prof Steve Pickering (stephen.pickering@nottingham.ac.uk) or Dr Tom Turner (Thomas.Turner@nottingham.ac.uk). Please note that applications sent directly to these email addresses will not be accepted. All applications for this post must be completed at https://www.hyfisyn.eu/open-positions
