Project description: 

Dr Salah Mansour and Prof Paul Elkington in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton, offer a Medical Research Council (MRC) funded Biomedical research studentship in Infection and Immunity.  The project studies the host-pathogen interaction in human tuberculosis infection and skills development will include protein biochemistry, T cell recognition, 3D cell culture and immunological assays such as Luminex and flow cytometry. The project is a collaborative study with a large pharmaceutical company and a placement in their labs will be part of the training. We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated student to commence from Jan 2019.

The student will commence a 3.5 year PhD project and interact with a cohort of like-minded students from our Faculty. In year 1, you will begin your bespoke research in Dr Mansour and Prof Elkington’s laboratories in Southampton.  Training will be provided through taught modules on the PhD programme, and through undertaking research in the Mansour and Elkington research groups.  The project investigates the role of unconventional CD1-restricted T cells in the control of tuberculosis infection, which kills more people than any other worldwide.

The successful candidate is likely to have the following qualifications:

A 1stor 2:1 degree in a relevant discipline and/or second degree with a related Masters

Funding information: 

A fully funded studentship, including fees, stipend and project costs, will be awarded to the successful applicant.  Eligible students* will be paid at the standard UK Research Council recommended rate £14,777 pa plus an additional annual uplift from the industrial sponsor.
