The University Secretariat and Legal Services department is responsible for providing or procuring all legal advice relating to the University’s primary purpose (teaching and learning, and research) and trade activities.

The Opportunity

We are recruiting an experienced legal professional primarily to deliver high quality, timely and robust legal advice in relation to employment issues and HR policies and procedures. In addition, you will be expected to provide advice on student matters such as internal complaints and academic appeals working closely with the Office for Student Complaints (OSCAR) and the Case Manager for Appeals to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator.

You will enjoy high levels of independence, managing your own case load with the freedom to resolve matters in a proactive way. Reporting to the University Secretary, you will have the discretion to determine priorities and propose creative approaches to achieving your objectives.

Your internal clients will include senior management and colleagues across the University including HR professionals.

Who we are seeking:

Candidates must possess a relevant qualification. The majority of your role is dedicated to employment related issues so detailed knowledge and experience in English employment law (including applicable EU law), and an awareness of public sector equality duties is essential.

You should have a good working knowledge of data protection law and Freedom of Information Act requests and the “prevent duty” under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, as well as a willingness to undertake the necessary research to advise more generally on the law of contract and tort and PREVENT.

You will be a confident communicator who can explain complex legal issues with clarity to a range of parties. High level problem solving and decision making are integral to many elements of the role, therefore a meticulous attention to detail and advanced analytical skills are required.
