The Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) is looking to appoint a Student Programmes Officer to lead a teaching team of administration for the department’s undergraduate and postgraduate students, schemes and modules. The well-functioning and established teaching team comprises five teaching administrators (two of which are part-time) who work together with specific remits of undergraduate, taught postgraduate, and, planning and assessment. The teaching team is part of a wider team of administrators in the department supporting other activities such as postgraduate research (PhD students), research, finance and human resources.

LEC is a large department with about 650 undergraduate students, 80 taught postgraduate students, 160 postgraduate research students, over 80 academic staff, 50 research staff and over 70 professional services staff. LEC’s teaching and research focuses on the natural environment, spanning across social- and natural sciences. The Times Good University Guide 2019 ranks Lancaster University 5th in the UK for Biological Sciences and 6th for Geography and Environmental Science. Lancaster University overall ranks 6th in the UK, and highest in the North, in the Good University Guide 2019, published in the Times and Sunday Times. Lancaster University is the 2018 University of the Year, according to The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide, and holds a Gold Award in the Teaching Excellence Framework, so it is an exciting time to join us.

This exciting opportunity would be suitable for someone with experience of working in a busy and thriving environment, preferably within the Higher Education sector. You will be a key member of professional services staff who is effective and contributes to the department’s strategic direction. You will lead the teaching administration team and ensure a high-level administrative service is provided to our students and academic staff. You will also work collaboratively across the faculty and central professional service divisions, leading on continuous improvement and driving new initiatives to meet strategic objectives that enhance the student experience. The main areas of activities you will be working on are quality assurance, timetabling and assessment. You should be numerate, have excellent organisational, administrative, IT and interpersonal skills. This varied and challenging role offers wide scope for personal and professional development.
