Working as part of a multidisciplinary team from the University’s Rights Lab, which is delivering research to help end modern slavery, the successful candidate will deliver research, stakeholder engagement and impact.

The role-holder will work closely with a team led by Dr. Andrea Nicholson focused on slavery survivors’ perspectives and narratives. Through new research publications, NGO engagement, and collaborations with a new Survivor Alliance, the team is working to place survivors' voices at the heart of antislavery, employ survivors' ideas to develop more effective strategies against slavery, and help create a survivor-informed global antislavery movement. We anticipate that the role-holder’s work will focus on, but will not be limited to children, ethnicity, and survivor and community identity.

The role-holder will:

Gather testimonies of contemporary survivor narratives, including interviewing, transcription, narrative introductions, securing permissions, coding, archiving and analysis.Undertake work relate to survivor’s journeys outside and after the National Referral Mechanism to understand risks, vulnerabilities, and the availability and access to survivor support.Work with external partners and communities, particularly the police, to develop research on Roma vulnerability to slavery.Assist in the gathering of child narratives, analysis, and evaluation, including analysis of child versus adult voices.Develop new fieldwork interview methods with survivors and affected communities.Build and develop existing NGO and law enforcement collaborative relationships, develop and participate in related projects.Source resources developed by NGOs and other organisations.Assist with the construction of training materials as required.

The role-holder will work alongside team members to develop and maintain key strategic partnerships and will collaborate with other Rights Lab teams and projects to integrate survivor perspectives. We anticipate that the work will involve engaging with NGOs, government, and law enforcement as well as private sector partners, for joint projects, training programmes, and workshops. The role-holder will also develop funding applications in support of this research programme, collaborate on new research publications, and contribute to the writing of policy and research reports for various audiences.

We welcome applications from recent PhD graduates and from those who do not hold a PhD but have equivalent research experience and expertise, as well as from applicants with postdoctoral experience. The role is available from 01 November 2018, as a fixed-term post for one year with the possibility of extension. This is a full-time job but we will consider applications from candidates who wish to work part-time (minimum 0.6).
