Assistant Professor of Adaptation to the Environment (MED258618)

The School of Life Sciences seeks applications for an Assistant Professor from researchers working in the broad area of 'Adaptation to the Environment’. As a division within the School, we have existing research strengths in ecology and evolution, microbial engineering, microbial pathogenicity and immunity, developmental biology and human molecular genetics. Research is focussed on both pro- and eukaryotes. More broadly, we are aligned to two of the University’s cross-faculty research initiatives, which are “Future Foods” and “Green Chemicals”, and also the University’s ‘Life in Changing Environments’ Research Priority Area.  

We welcome applicants in any area of biology but particularly those that can contribute to our current strengths and form bridges between our current themes. We strongly encourage applicants who can contribute to the ‘Future Foods’ and ‘Green Chemicals’ initiatives, working across the science, engineering and medical faculties, with exciting opportunities to interact with colleagues more broadly across the University. 

The successful applicant will be establishing a track record in their field and will be able to develop a programme of research that is supported by funding from research councils and other external organisations. An interest in exploring new opportunities, such as the Global Challenges Research Fund would also be welcome. 

During the first two years of the appointment teaching and administration burdens will be minimised to allow the role-holder to focus on securing new research income, submitting high quality publications, and kick-starting collaborative activities. 

The School is committed to excellent teaching alongside excellent research and the role holder will also contribute to teaching on the Biology, Zoology, Genetics and Natural Sciences degrees. We are looking for a colleague who will take an innovative approach to delivering teaching and who has the ability to make contributions to curriculum design. 

Mentorship is an important part of ensuring that individuals within the School move forward in their careers, and that as a school we are as good as we can be. The role holder will have line management responsibilities for the professional development of junior colleagues, and will contribute to some of the administrative tasks that are directed towards the running of the School. 

The role will be responsible for generating new intellectual understanding through the application of knowledge and for developing ideas for the application of research and teaching outcomes. 

Candidates must hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject area.

This is a full-time permanent role, however job share arrangements may be considered.
