The successful candidate will work at the design, prototype development, testing and engineering of advanced high power dc-dc converter topologies and relative controllers, intended primarily for use on-board transport applications. Novel wide-band-gap semiconductor technology (silicon carbide, SiC; gallium nitride, GaN) will be used to develop solutions which advance the state-of-the-art in efficiency and power density; the magnetic components and controllers design and realization will need to be compatible with the high switching frequency operation of the power cell. She/he will have a leading and independent role in setting up the test benches required for experimental validation, as well as in the active participation in project meetings and technical reporting. The activity is likely to generate high impact research outputs, which the researcher is expected to disseminate with publications in major international specialist journals and presentations at selected international specialist conferences. Support with teaching duties and student supervision also pertain to the remit of the role. Availability for occasional international travel is necessary.

The requested skills and competences are: PhD in power electronics (or being very close to get one) or equivalent ; solid experience with common design tools of power electronics, including the design of high frequency magnetic components and FPGA-based control boards; experience and ability to work alone in the lab conducting tests on high power dc-dc converters; previous knowledge of high power dc-dc converter topologies and wide-band-gap semiconductors use; good communication and reporting skills and previous experience of participating in international projects and disseminating results at international conferences and workshops. Candidates with directly relevant experience on multi-port active-bridge topologies will be highly favoured. 

This full time post is available from January 2019 and will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 30 November 2020. Job share arrangements may be considered.
