Research Fellow in vehicle state estimation and control
Applications are invited for two postdoctoral research positions starting on 1st January 2019 (or soon thereafter if a later start is required by the successful applicant) to develop state estimators, sensor fusion systems and advanced controllers for electric vehicles with multiple motors.
The posts are part of collaborative projects that aim to develop new state estimators and control systems for fully electric vehicles with individually controlled motors. A budget for travel and other expenses will be provided, and there will be several opportunities to attend related conferences. The research will be carried out with collaborators of several industrial and academic institutions. The project outcomes will be evaluated on state-of-the-art vehicle demonstrators.
The successful candidates must have a strong background in control theory and should be a holder of a PhD degree in one of the areas of control systems engineering, automotive engineering, mechanical engineering or electrical engineering. Also, expertise in the following areas is highly desirable:
Vehicle dynamics simulation; State estimation based on Luenberger observers, Kalman filters and neural networks; Sensor fusion; Vehicle dynamics control and torque-vectoring.The appointee will join Surrey’s Centre for Automotive Engineering of the Mechanical Engineering Sciences Department, which has research interests in a wide range of topics, including active vehicle dynamics, tyre dynamics, electric powertrains, vehicle aerodynamics and novel transmission systems for electric and hybrid electric vehicles.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£31,302) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£32,236).
