Applications are invited for the above post based at the Universities Hospital of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, which offers easy access to the Peak District. The successful candidate will join the Division of Medical Sciences and Graduate Entry Medicine. It is the largest of 11 Divisions within the University of Nottingham School of Medicine. The Division was established in August 2007, employs >100 staff (biomedical scientists, healthcare professionals, educationalists, clinical academics, administrative & technical staff) & delivers several educational programmes. The Division currently has >70 MD / PhD students.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out BBSRC funded studies on the impact of inactivity and diet on muscle health with age in C. elegans. The main duties include independently designing and conducting genetic, pharmacologic, nutritional, and biochemical experiments upon C. elegans. This includes interpreting results, planning and conducting follow on experiments, maintaining cultures and supplies, diagnosing and correcting problems with equipment and procedures, and accurate completion of documentation. The successful candidate will also be expected to train students and participate in outreach and events. 

Candidates must have a PhD or evidence of a PhD within one year of taking up the post. The PhD must be in metabolic or muscle biology or physiology or the equivalent. Candidates must have experience in conducting metabolic studies. Candidates must also be able to self-manage experiments and train others in laboratory techniques.

The ideal candidate will have experience with the biochemical analysis of mitochondrial metabolism in response to inactivity or diet in C. elegans.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of up to three years, but must start by 01 February 2019.

This post requires working hours and days as dictated by experiments (e.g. depending on experiment design, irregular hours and days may be required). The post also requires that some analysis is conducted in Nottingham.
