The University of Nottingham is seeking to employ a scientist who will lead and deliver on the high-level/ high skilled research and associated teaching requirements relating to biomolecular design and characterisation for the Saving Oseberg project and its mission to find suitable consolidants to replace the rotted biopolymer components (through acid and microbial decay) in archaeological wood with materials that are stable and resistant to acid/ microbial decay.  

The role requires highly skilled collaborative research primarily with (i) the Saving Oseberg team, Norway (ii) the Wageningen Food & Biobased Research Institute, Holland (iii) the Mary Rose Trust, Portsmouth and (iv) locally with the School of Chemistry.   The role requires skilled teaching supervision of PhD students and Masters/Undergraduate project students.  The role also requires liasing with senior Managers, Conservators and Researchers at collaborating institutions. 

It is anticipated that the NCMH will receive STSM (short term scientific mission) students/early career researchers as part of an associated and successful EEC COST Action (CA17128 Establishment of a Pan-European Network on the Sustainable Valorisation of Lignin) and you will take a lead role in associated organisation and supervision. Because of the short-term appointment (19 months) you will need to hit the ground running and be required to have particular experience and skill at analytical ultracentrifugation, circular dichroism spectroscopy, analytical chromatography and the hydrodynamics/biochemistry/ microbiology of complex biological systems. Previous experience at an Associate Professor level (full-time, part-time or Honorary) is desirable.

This area is not only of importance both nationally and internationally in terms of preservation and conservation of maritime treasure but also central to the continued success and development of the National Centre for Macromolecular Hydrodynamics, the longest established Research Centre at the University of Nottingham, and contribution to the University’s world leading excellence in the field of Polymer Science. 

This position will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 July 2020, hours of work will be part-time (7.25 per week).
