An exciting opportunity for a Post-doctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) is offered at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of Hull to work on development of bioactive materials funded by a major multinational company. The successful candidate will be responsible for formulating novel bioactive materials and will be analysing their structure, rheology, texture and other properties. The PDRA will study the specific response of the produced materials to factors like acidity, composition, ionic strength and others. The PDRA will work under the supervision of Prof Vesselin Paunov and Dr Tommy Horozov in collaboration with the industrial partner. The PDRA will report research results to the project supervisory team on a weekly basis and may co-supervise a PhD student working on the project. The PDRA will be producing an appropriate quantity and quality of company progress reports and refereed research publications.


This research project will be carried out at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of Hull and will offer excellent opportunity for post-doctoral training and experience in interdisciplinary areas which is very highly sought after by potential future employers. The successful candidate will receive a high level of training which, in addition to learning about specific techniques, attending seminar programmes etc., includes the opportunity to work closely with the R&D of a major multinational company. The production of written reports alongside regular meetings with the project supervisor will be required to assess the progress of the project. 


The University of Hull has recently made significant investments in interdisciplinary biomedical research. The Chemistry and Biochemistry department occupies two buildings at the heart of the main campus, and has recently joined the new Allam Building for Biomedical Research and Centre for Positron Emission Tomography.   The University is also currently building a new Health Campus on the Hull site. Applicants for this position should have a BSc or MChem degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry, as well as a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering or related area with a desirable specialisation in one or more of the following areas: physical or analytical chemistry, or materials chemistry or biomaterials. Good background and experimental skills in colloids, new product research and development, and formulation science would be beneficial. The applicant should be enthusiastic, with good interpersonal and communication skills. 


The terms of the research grant that fund this position require that employment will commence on 1 February 2019 and will continue for a fixed term of 6 months.
