Description :

In response to increasing student numbers, Lancaster Medical School, part of the Faculty of Health and Medicine, wishes to appoint a number of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Tutors. PBL requires a tutor to work with small groups of students to facilitate their learning across all four curricular themes: Medical Sciences; Population Health; Health, Culture and Society; and Professional Practice, Values and Ethics. Accordingly, we are looking for candidates that can demonstrate knowledge of some or all of these areas, and facilitate understanding of their application in healthcare. Experience of delivering higher education and/or working in healthcare are beneficial. For 1st and 2nd Year PBL tutors, holding a Primary Medical Qualification is not essential. 3rd and 4th Year PBL is facilitated by clinical tutors so a Primary Medical Qualification is essential. We are primarily looking for 1st and 2nd year tutors but have some vacancies for 3rd Year tutors.

PBL modules run over two weeks and are spread throughout the academic year. Total hours of work for PBL tutors differ depending on which year of study the tutor facilitates. There is some scope to negotiate with candidates their level of commitment and which year of study would be most appropriate for them.

You will work in collaboration with the other PBL tutors and staff in Lancaster Medical School.  In addition to facilitating PBL modules, you will be expected to engage in the ‘Support and Development’ Programme for PBL tutors which includes activities such as peer review.

We welcome applications from those experienced in delivering higher education who hold a PhD in a health-related area/discipline, or those who have experience of, and qualifications relating to, teaching health professionals in higher education. Prior experience of delivering PBL is not essential as training will be provided.

These posts are paid on a sessional basis and subject to annual review.

To arrange an informal discussion about the vacancies, please contact Dr Dawn Goodwin (email: d.s.goodwin@lancaster.ac.uk).

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
