ERC Research Associate/Fellow in the Latinization of the north-western Roman Provinces at the University of Nottingham.

Applications are invited for the above post on the 5-year ERC project, The Latinization of the north-western Roman Provinces: Sociolinguistics, Epigraphy and Archaeology (LatinNow). The appointee will work most closely with Dr Mullen (PI, University of Nottingham) and Dr Cotugno (RF, University of Nottingham/Oxford) in researching the nature of Latinization and its correlation with a range of social variables in Germania Superior.

This research will involve some primary research (especially into epigraphy and writing equipment) in educational institutes, museums and archives around Europe (travel expenses covered). The main output of this core research will be a co-authored volume and a project GIS. The appointee will be actively encouraged to present and to publish articles, book chapters etc. independently and/or collaboratively. She/he will also contribute, where appropriate, to the other project tasks, including outreach (e.g. social media, educational activities, touring exhibition). The Research Associate/Fellow appointed will have the opportunity to extend their research portfolio and be trained to a high level in e.g. Reflectance Transformation Imaging.

The senior academics on the team, including Professor Alan Bowman (Centre for the Study of Ancient Documents, CSAD, Oxford) and the European Senior Advisors, will assist in the career development of the appointee. The team seeks to foster a productive environment of academic independence and collaboration. There will be project offices on University Park, Nottingham, and at CSAD, Oxford. The Research Associate/Fellow will be free to study at both. She/he will be expected to attend project meetings at CSAD, Oxford (travel expenses covered).

Applicants should have a PhD, or equivalent, in relevant subject(s), for example ancient history, Latin epigraphy, Latin linguistics, Roman archaeology or be near completion.

The post will be offered on a full-time or part-time, fixed-term contract basis at either 12 months 0.5 FTE and 6 months 1 FTE (18 months in total), or 12 months 1 FTE (other options may be considered) with the possibility of extension depending on funds and approvals.  The appointee will start, at the earliest in January 2019.
