Description :

John Hansard Gallery – a leading public gallery of contemporary art that is part of the University of Southampton and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation – is seeking to appoint an experienced Communities Curator who will be a key member of the Engagement and Learning Programme Team at this exciting moment for the Gallery. The successful applicant will assist with the delivery of our acclaimed and innovative engagement and learning programme for schools, colleges, community groups, young people, families, adults and older people. The Communities Curator will be responsible for two programmes - JHG Beacons, which focuses on skills development (including Arts Award) for two entry level staff positions per year, and JHG Ambassadors, working with community representatives to create audience development initiatives to reflect and engage diverse communities across the city.

Previous experience of working in a gallery environment in a similar role is essential, along with a good knowledge of gallery engagement and learning, and a commitment to diversity, equality, inclusiveness and making contemporary art accessible to all.

John Hansard Gallery plays a dynamic role in the cultural life of Southampton and the region, through its locally engaged and internationally acclaimed programme. Established in 1979, the Gallery has entered a new chapter in its history by recently relocating and relaunching in a newly purpose-built city centre gallery, part of Studio 144 in Southampton’s Cultural Quarter. The relocation has tripled the gallery space available and provides an opportunity for greater impact, both in terms of artists’ production and reaching new and diverse audiences locally, nationally and internationally.

We seek to ensure that our organisation and programme are relevant and accessible to all, with equality, diversity and fairness at the core of what we do. We are committed to ensuring that all employees and job applicants are provided with equality of opportunity in employment. We therefore encourage applications from all sections of the community.
