Project description

A prestigious three-year fully funded PhD studentship is available in the Smart Electronic Materials and Systems Research Group (SEMS) group in the Department of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). SEMS group is a world-leading research group for printed electronic textiles with a long track record of delivering research/innovation projects. The team has led over £10 million worth of research projects in the past 10 years. More information about the research group is available at https://www.sems.ecs.soton.ac.uk/

This PhD is focused on developing novel inks for printing electronics on textiles to give them new functionality. The application of these novel inks will be demonstrated through wearable applications (e.g. wearable sensors/actuators). The project requires education/experience in materials science, chemistry, engineering or other relevant disciplines. The ideal candidate will enjoy practical hands-on work and be willing to acquire new skills, working individually and part of a team. The PhD student will have opportunities to work with both internal and external collaborators.

The ideal candidates should have, or expect to gain, a first or upper second-class degree in a related subject (Materials, Chemistry, Engineering). Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate excellent communication and writing skills.

The scholarship is only open to UK and EU citizens due to funder restrictions. Self-funded international students are also welcome to apply for the post but not the scholarship.
