Description :

The Astrogroup of the University of Southampton's Department of Physics & Astronomy invites applications for one research fellow position in High-Energy astrophysics. The Research Fellow will be joining a rapidly growing team and work with Dr Diego Altamirano to understand the physics of accretion onto compact objects. The fellow will have the possibility to join the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) team as an Affiliated Scientist, and will have the same access to non-public data and opportunities to publish results as do Co-I members. The fellow is expected to work on projects based on NICER data (which include both data from neutron star and black hole systems) and help in the supervision of projects lead by PhD students.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Astronomy and Astrophysics with detailed understanding and knowledge of X-ray data analysis. However, applications are welcome from all researchers from a wide range of backgrounds if your current research is focused on any of the different flavours of  accretion disc physics.

The Southampton Astro-group provides a stimulating and collegial environment with many opportunities to collaborate with other group members. Our main research themes are compact objects and time-domain astrophysics. We are strongly committed to diversity in the student and academic population and you will be supported in developing your career while maintaining a good work-life balance through family-friendly policies. The position will provide you with time and resources to explore and develop independent research.

The position is available from February 2019 on a full time basis until 31/03/2021, with the possibility of extension depending on performance and funding. In addition, the University offers an attractive benefits package and relocation assistance.

If you are interested in the role and submit your application by the deadline stated above, your application will be fully considered, but the position remains open until filled

Applications should consist of a cover letter, CV, publication list, and a brief statement of research interests (2 pages max). Please upload all documents as one pdf file. Moreover, two letters of reference are required with contact details to be provided on application (letter requests will be sent automatically by the application system).

Informal inquiries are particularly welcome. Please contact Dr Diego Altamirano (d.altamirano@soton.ac.uk).

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

The University Recruitment department will be closed from close of business on Thursday 20th December to Wednesday 2nd January 2019, so we will not be able to assist you with any application queries during this time.
