Description :

A new opportunity exists to work on an STFC-funded project characterising outflow from Jupiter’s high-latitude magnetosphere. The six-month post is based in the Space and Planetary Physics (SPP) group in the Department of Physics at Lancaster University. SPP is a diverse and dynamic research group that uses theory, modelling, and data analysis to study the ionospheres and magnetospheres of Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus.

The post focuses on developing the theory describing the polar outflow at gas giant planets. Polar wind mass loss has links with auroral processes, thermospheric behaviour, and magnetospheric dynamics. The work will further extend to developing a numerical model of Jupiter’s polar wind. The research will test and inform current theories of magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere coupling and auroral processes at Jupiter. Applicants should have experience with numerical models of physical systems.

You will have the opportunity to disseminate scientific results through high-impact peer reviewed publications and relevant meetings, both international and national. You will be encouraged to develop internal and external collaborations. SPP / Lancaster University offers opportunities to participate, engage, and benefit from training, further professional development, and knowledge exchange programs.

You will be joining a group of scientists studying the space plasma environment stretching from the surface of the Sun to the upper atmosphere of the Earth and other planets. The Physics Department provides an open, congenial, flexible work environment with a strong record of research excellence. It is strongly committed to fostering diversity within its community as a source of excellence, cultural enrichment, and social strength. We welcome those who would contribute to the further diversification of our department. Information about our campus, some of the local amenities at the university and the surrounding areas can be found at http://www.lancaster.ac.uk/about-us/theuniversity/our-campus/.

Interviews are planned for 14 February 2019 in person (if UK based) or via video link (if based outside the UK).

This is a fixed term appointment for six months commencing on 1 March 2019.

Informal enquiries should be directed in the first instance to Dr Licia Ray (licia.ray@lancaster.ac.uk)

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
