Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in bioprocess engineering, biocatalysis or related process chemical field? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive universities?

As a Research Fellow in Process Research and Development you will support the development and transfer of bioprocess technology from an academic to industrial environment. You will join a large project that is supported by the Newton-Bhabba Fund through Innovate UK and BBSRC in partnership with the University of Leeds, Manchester, Advanced Microwave Technologies and Fiberight Ltd, and five other academic and industry institutions in India. The project builds on existing Industrial Biotechnology work at the University of Leeds and with partners, and has the aim of developing and implementing in India, processes to convert the biological fraction of their municipal solid waste (MSW) into higher value sustainable chemical products and energy. 

You will work closely with the wider team and lead research in: evaluating different pre-treatments of Indian bio-waste, including microwave; testing new enzymes and formulations generated in Manchester; defining improved procedures and optimise the hydrolysis process to increase sugar productivity. This research is leading-edge and expected to lead to high impact publications, patents and industrial application, which makes this position an ideal training opportunity for an industrial or academic career. 

Working in the Institute of Process Research and Development (iPRD) you will join a vibrant, growing and widely recognised Institute of around 40 academics, PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, with a strong focus on collaborative working with chemical engineers from industry to develop more efficient processes. 

You will have a PhD in bioprocess engineering, biocatalysis or a closely allied discipline, excellent communication skills and the ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.
