The University of Surrey School of Law is committed to the highest quality of scholarship and research. It also has ambitious plans to innovate in teaching and provide opportunities to students to become intellectually unique leaders in the legal profession capable of developing innovative ways of thinking about law. The Law School has two research centres that provide a springboard for innovative research and teaching—namely, our China Law Centre and the Centre for Law and Philosophy. The latter is the largest dedicated research centre on legal philosophy and legal theory in the world and its expertise enables us to find imaginative and original ways of thinking about complex legal problems in substantive fields that range from Public and Private Law to Artificial Intelligence. Members of our academic staff have international reputations for research and are experienced legal practitioners, providing consultancy to law firms, governments, non-governmental organisations and businesses around the world. Our expertise focuses on Legal Philosophy and Legal Theory; Environmental Law; Criminal Justice and Criminology; Criminal Law; Health Sciences and Law; International Economic Law; Neuroscience and Law; Roman Legal History; Chinese Comparative Law; Artificial Intelligence, Ethics and Law; Public International Law; European Law; and Human Rights Law.

In line with the University’s ambition of deepening its strength in areas related to data ethics, artificial intelligence and the digital economy, the Law School is seeking to appoint a Principal Teaching Fellow on a three-year fixed term contract with primary responsibility for developing a Law Clinic related to the legal aspects of the digital economy, as well as teaching core subjects in the Law curriculum. Applicants will have the ability to develop modules and innovative pedagogical approaches in areas of teaching need such as equity and trusts, contracts, tort, employment and land. You will show resourcefulness and enthusiasm, and demonstrate the ability to collaborate with colleagues and work as part of a supportive team.  As part of the selection process, successful candidates will be expected to give a presentation that will reflect these skills. You will also be able to demonstrate an ability to undertake administrative roles in the School and provide a credible plan for building a suite of sector-leading clinical legal offerings for students within the Law School related to Law, Business and Digital Economy.
