Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Professor in Mechatronics based in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering (M3) in Nottingham University’s faculty of engineering. The appointed academic will complement and strengthen research related to the expansion of activities within the Rolls Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Manufacturing and On-Wing Technology. The UTC expansion is in the area of design and control of complex mechatronics systems for manufacturing processes and on-platform technologies (in-situ repair/processing of large structures without need of disassembly). This research strand is a combination of mechanical and electrical engineering for the realisation of specialist mechatronic systems (for example control of invasive robotic systems) for on-platform processing of aerospace components/assemblies.

The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of teaching for the department’s undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses in the area of manufacturing engineering. Broader teaching capability is highly advantageous as is relevant teaching experience. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they can teach to a high standard including:

Complying with Nottingham University’s teaching quality assurance standards and proceduresSupervising projects and practical workCoaching and supporting tutorial groups, developing student knowledge and learning skillsProviding curriculum leadership within own area of expertise, especially collaborating with colleagues in engineering to design modules and programs.

The successful candidate is expected to join the fast expanding Manufacturing and On-wing Technology UTC and contribute high quality research. Candidates should have:

A PhD or equivalent in Mechatronics/Electrical Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/Roboticsan established track record of independent researchhigh quality publications in peer-reviewed journals (number commensurate with years spent as a researcher);the proven ability to work with both industrial and academic partners; andExperience of developing successful proposals and applications for research funding.
