The School of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton is at the forefront of world-class teaching and research. We wish to enhance our established research and teaching programmes with the appointment of an Associate Professor in Physiotherapy. Our BSc Physiotherapy course currently ranks 3rd in the UK and 1st for research quality (Complete University Guide 2019). We are seeking to appoint a highly-motivated professional to teach in their own specialist area (preference will be given to someone with musculoskeletal or cardio-respiratory physiotherapy expertise) and provide generic teaching across all areas of physiotherapy. You will join an established and highly-skilled teaching team and make a substantial contribution to the continued success of our well-funded research.

There will be opportunities to contribute to ongoing curriculum review, ensuring that our programmes (BSc and MSc Physiotherapy) produce future leaders in clinical physiotherapy, health care, health research and health education. This is a stimulating position that offers the opportunity to develop and lead cross-disciplinary research within the School of Health Sciences, and throughout the University of Southampton. The School has recently amalgamated into the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences (FELS), which offers further opportunities for innovative, interdisciplinary research. This has also involved the redevelopment of new purpose-built clinical teaching and research facilities at the University campus. 

In this role you will:

Teach into undergraduate and postgraduate courses in physiotherapy, take on responsibility for unit of study coordination and contribute to curriculum development within your area of expertise (musculoskeletal or cardio-respiratory preferred);Pursue a research programme that aligns with the research strengths of the School and Faculty, including development and leadership of collaborative research projects, grant acquisition, peer-reviewed publications and presentations; Recruit, supervise and examine postgraduate research students;Provide academic leadership within the Discipline of Physiotherapy, and particularly within your area of expertise;Perform clinical visiting and placement support;Provide student support and progression.

To succeed in securing this role, you will have:

HCPC registration and be a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy; Doctoral level qualification in a field relevant to physiotherapyAcademic experience in higher education. Formal teaching qualification(s);Clinical expertise in any area of physiotherapy with preference for cardiorespiratory or musculoskeletal physiotherapy;A successful background in independent research (health or pedagogic), as demonstrated by an established publication record in high calibre journals and competitive grant acquisition;A record of successful research higher degree student supervision;Experience in curriculum development, implementation and evaluation preferably in musculoskeletal or cardiorespiratory physiotherapy;Demonstrated ability to lead and develop academic teams in teaching and/or research, and ensure plans complement broader research and education strategy;Vision for the future of Physiotherapy in a changing health climate, as well as an understanding of changes in the health sector and its impact around your discipline;Evidence of effective inter-personal skills;Postgraduate clinical qualifications in physiotherapy will be highly regarded, but not essential.
