It is ranked 4th nationally for the impact of its research, with 91% of our research rated as world leading or internationally excellent. The Department’s research themes cover Astrophysics; Nanoscience and Photonics, all underpinned by a strong theory activity, which in addition has a distinct research programme of its own.

The Department has over 40 academic staff with over 80 postdoctoral researchers & PhD students and recruits approximately 120 high-calibre undergraduate students per annum.

As Professor and Head of Physics you will be responsible for leading this vibrant and active department to enable it to reach its full potential and deliver excellence across the entire portfolio of academic activity.

You will create and lead delivery of a strategy for the Department that will further enhance the Department’s burgeoning reputation. It is expected the strategy will grow collaborations with other academic Departments and Research Centres both nationally and internationally as well as forging closer partnerships with industry.

Candidates for the post will have a strong international research track record in any area of Physics and Astronomy related to the Department’s research themes, but candidates from the theory community are especially welcome.

You will have a proven track record of leadership and management within academia and should demonstrate the ability to enthuse both staff and students. You will be aware of the challenges in the current UK HEI environment and will be able to address those creatively. A commitment to world-class research and innovative education is essential.

The University of Bath’s advancement since its foundation in 1966 has been remarkable. Nationally recognised as one of the leading institutions for research and teaching excellence, it is ranked 6th by the Guardian University Guide for 2019 and was awarded Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework. The University offers a distinctive blend of academic reputation, outstanding graduate employment record, and a full programme of social, cultural and sporting opportunities.
