Description :

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Surrey invites applications for one post of Senior Lecturer or Lecturer in Computer Science. The post includes teaching and research and is part of the Department’s continued expansion.

The Department of Computer Science within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences has an international reputation for research and teaching. Research in the department is focused on two main areas - Nature Inspired Computing and Engineering (NICE), and Secure Systems, with Surrey hosting one of the Academic Centre’s of Excellence recognised by NCSC.

The Department has a large secure systems research group, led by Professor Steve Schneider, with expertise in security by design, cryptography, authentication, verification, distributed ledger technologies, trusted systems, IoT security, program analysis and cloud security. Professor Yaochu Jin also leads a research group specialising in machine learning, complex systems and networks, Bayesian learning, neuroscience, evolutionary computation and applications of machine learning.

This post offers an exciting opportunity for an appointment to strengthen the research of our existing research, especially at the interface between security and machine learning and in data science.

Candidates to the post should have a PhD in a relevant subject or equivalent professional experience. An ability to secure research funding and produce high quality outputs and manage research projects and supervise research students is also required.  It is expected that the post-holder will also contribute to high quality teaching in computer science at undergraduate and post-graduate level and to supervise undergraduate projects and dissertations. The Department has a GCHQ recognised MSc in Information Security and is launching a new MSc in Data Science. Appointments at Senior Lecturer level will need to have shown a strong contribution to research, teaching and leadership.

Interviews will be held on the 3rd and 4th April 2019.

This is a full-time and permanent position. We would expect the appointed candidate to start as soon as possible.

The University and the Department specifically are committed to building a culturally diverse organisation and strongly encourages applications from female and minority candidates. The Department of Computer Science was awarded a Bronze Athena SWAN award, in recognition of our commitment to equality and diversity.

The department encourages interested applicants to contact the Head of Department, Dr Helen Treharne (h.treharne@surrey.ac.uk) for further details and an informal discussion.
