Description :

Applications are invited for the above position to join the Manufacturing Metrology Team, as part of the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing, at the University of Nottingham. The Manufacturing Metrology Team conducts fundamental research to enable the next-generation of off-line and in-line metrology tools for advanced manufacturing methods with focus on precision manufacturing and additive manufacturing. More information can be found on our website (www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/manufacturing-metrology).

Coherence scanning interferometry (CSI) is a well-established technique for surface topography measurement. Due to the optical set up of CSI, it has a difficult-to-predict response to surfaces with a range of slope angles, for examples micro-lenses and freedom optics. Over the past few years, however, we have developed a theory (the "foil model") to predict the response of CSI to surface slopes (within a certain range) and hence to be able to calibrate and correct its response to such slopes.

The project will develop a software to enable us to test the model on commercial instruments, validate the theory and apply it to a number of case studies. The software would be used on a commercial instrument for validation and evaluation of its commercial potential.

Candidates must have an excellent degree in preferably physics or mathematics, and a PhD (or near completion) or equivalent experience. Strong skills in optics and computational methods are essential. It is also expected that the candidate will demonstrate high level communication and organisational skills and an aptitude for liaison with industrial partners.

This full-time post is available from March 2019 and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 12 months, with potential extensions to be discussed. Job share arrangements may be considered.
