The University of Nottingham is inviting applications for a Director of Strategic Development and Delivery for the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) campus.

In this role you will provide leadership in the development and delivery of strategic planning, performance and change management of the Malaysia campus. You will work directly and collaboratively with the Provost in delivering a fundamental step change in all aspects of the performance of the campus. You will be an ex officio member of the campus Management Board (MB), influencing and supporting MB colleagues. Engaging and collaborating with academic and professional service colleagues will also be crucial in the process of driving change.

As the Director of Strategic Development and Delivery, you will be expected to support the Provost in delivering a revised strategic plan for UNM that has the buy-in and engagement of its staff, joint venture partners and other stakeholders, as well as putting in place a programme of activity that will deliver against this strategic plan. The business planning and monitoring process must drive the performance of UNM in a collaborative and coherent way, with the right mechanism and capability to maintain delivery against a medium-term financial plan that is able to support the strategy and future financial sustainability of UNM.

In addition to developing, delivering and monitoring a refreshed strategy you will be expected to lead on a program of continual change management/improvement. Initial projects may include (but not be limited to):

Reviewing UNM standard operating proceduresReviewing committee terms of reference, membership, reporting lines and links to other university committeesEvaluation of UNM’s approach to Audit and Risk management and how this can best be managed and reported at the appropriate levelsWorking with Professional Development, and other stakeholders, develop a staff development program for key members of our staffReduce the amount of paperwork and bureaucracy both across the campus and with key stakeholdersOur Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) has now expired (after 20 years). Working with relevant stakeholders, you will develop, and get approved, a revised JVAWork with other MB colleagues, supporting them to develop/implement their key priorities

It will be important to engage with external stakeholders including (but not limited to) Government Agencies (both UK and Malaysia, as well as more globally), Foreign and Commonwealth Office(s), Joint Venture Partners, Director of Inter-Campus Collaboration, Office for Global Engagement and our UK and Ningbo China Campuses, to develop and lead projects and activities at the request of the Provost.

It is expected that you will propose and implement a sustainable plan for when this fixed term position ends; this may require reviewing role and responsibilities of staff and implementing appropriate staff development.

With an honours degree or equivalent and detailed knowledge of strategic and business planning processes, you will have a thorough understanding of Higher Education Sector, including policy, environment, politics, national and international trends/developments and be aware of the current and forthcoming challenges and opportunities facing the sector. Ideally, you will have an understanding of the information and operational requirements of improving the performance of academic delivery and service units in a large university or similar organisation. As an experienced people manager, with the ability to motivate, coach and mentor colleagues, you will have excellent presentation, communication, analytical and problem-solving skills and the confidence to utilise these in a large range of formal and informal settings. You will have excellent project management skills, as well as well-developed communication and influencing skills and experience of leading organisations, whilst demonstrating the ability to navigate and manage the political environment. The experience of working in different countries with a deep understanding of different cultures, and strong knowledge of any legal and statutory implications is essential.
