A short-term, Research Assistant post is available until 31st July 2019,  to provide research support to a new project (STOP) studying the global tobacco industry.

A core element of the role will be developing a database to enable the compiling and sharing of data on tobacco farming worldwide; tobacco supply/value chains from production to consumption; the economic arguments made by the tobacco industry in low and middle income countries (LMICs). The role holder may also be required to develop a media database.  

As such, we are hoping to recruit a person with a proven track record in database design and management.

To avoid potential conflicts of interests and to ensure compliance with Article 5.3 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), applicants are therefore asked to declare any current or previous occupational activity with any tobacco company or those receiving financial contributions from the industry, whether gainful or not.

Main duties and responsibilities of this short-term role:

Develop a database to enable the compiling and sharing of economic data on tobacco production and trade, as well as the arguments made by the tobacco industry in LMICsDevelop an additional database to enable the compiling and sharing of economic data on tobacco production and trade, as well as the arguments made by the tobacco industry in LMICsMaintain and update the content of the database.You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by your line manager. You are required to follow all University policies and procedures at all times and take account of University guidance.

THE STOP PROJECT

The Stop Tobacco Organisations & Products (STOP) project is an innovative $15m project funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, aimed at developing a tobacco industry watchdog to delivery policy change. It is a partnership between the Tobacco Control Research Group at the University of Bath, the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control, Thailand, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, Paris, and Vital Strategies, New York. 

As such it brings together the global leaders in in tobacco industry monitoring and research, advocacy, accountability and communication. This unique combination will help ensure our research is widely and effectively communicated and maximally impactful.

We will be leading the tobacco industry monitoring and research arm of the work. With a focus on low and middle income countries, we will be extending the scale, geographic reach and responsiveness of our current research. 

We are looking for someone who is able start ideally in March 2019; the role has a fixed term until 31st July 2019.
