Description :
The research group "Biomolecular Quantum Sensing" invites applications for a position as doctoral researcher (3 years) starting in May 1, 2019 or later. Background In recent years, defects in diamonds have been shown to act as atomic sized sensors for nanoscale nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. Here, this innovative quantum technology will be applied in chemistry for analyzing molecular structures of biochemical and catalytic systems at surfaces. The project will be highly interdisciplinary at the unique interface between quantum technology and chemistry. The research position is situated in the Chemistry Department (physical chemistry) at the Technische Universität München and funded by the DFG. Recent publications related to this research performed at Harvard are Nature 555, 351–354 (2018) and arXiv:1810.02408. More information can be found on www.bucherlab.org. Description of the work In this Ph.D. position, a highly sensitive NV-NMR setup will be developed for detecting NMR signals at surfaces. The project will include setting up the experiment, writing control software and performing NMR experiments on interesting (bio)chemical systems. The work will be highly interdisciplinary at the interface of (quantum)physics, chemistry and biology. Requirements: Prospective candidates should have a degree in physics or related field, interested in technology development and have hands-on experience in physics labs and Matlab programming. While not required, experience in one or more of the following topics are advantageous: NV-quantum sensing, microwave engineering, NMR/EPR For further information please contact the project leader, Dr. Dominik Bucher (bucher.dominik@gmx.de). The group offers an interesting and challenging position within a young, international and interdisciplinary team located at the Garching Campus of the TU München. The position is paid according to the Civil Service rates of the German States “TV-L”, E13 (if suitably qualified). The contract is for a three-year period for doctoral researchers Applications should include: • a motivational statement (at most one page) explaining the applicant's interest in the position as well as their relevant skills and experience • cv • copies of degrees / university transcripts, names and email address of at least one professors that may provide letters of recommendation. Applications should be sent as a single PDF file to: bucher.dominik@gmx.de. Please indicate “Ph.D. Position TUM” in the subject line.
