Fixed term full-time and part-time posts (0.6-0.8fte) for 12 months in the first instance.

We are looking for high calibre candidates with an interest in health research and/or experience in an NHS, social care or public health setting, global health in low resource settings, or health research management experience for a number of our key teams. Successful candidates will be offered positions in teams based on best fit of their skills to meet business area needs across the organisation and supported to move around the organisation.

This is an excellent opportunity for highly motivated individuals to work in an intellectually challenging area of health research management. As a Research Manager you will manage a substantial portfolio of work across our key research programmes. Working both individually and as part of a team, you will need to build and maintain positive and professional working relationships with people at all levels, both internally and externally; excellent communication and interpersonal skills are therefore essential. You will be capable of prioritising your own workload and using your initiative to lead on improvements to working practices. You must be able to understand rationalise and communicate complex problems or issues and take or recommend appropriate action.

You should have excellent writing and analytical skills supported by sound administrative experience, an understanding of medical and scientific literature, and an awareness of applied health research nationally and globally. You will be joining a cohesive team who are committed to adding maximum value to the management of health research.

The Wessex Institute is a large enterprise unit within the University of Southampton situated at the University of Southampton’s Science Park, Chilworth. The Institute is focused on providing high-quality, practice-based research evidence to support decision makers in health and social care. We offer a broad range of scientific and clinical expertise in added-value health research, research management and in health technology assessment. Our teams also comprise health research administrators, specialists in information management, finance, contracting, public and patient involvement and communications.

The Wessex institute is home to the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC), which was established in 2008. NETSCC runs five research funding programmes including national programmes and Global Health Research on behalf of the NIHR, and is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care.

You will be joining a vibrant institute, within the University’s faculty of Medicine and  dedicated staff teams focused on making a difference to patients and the public and providing research evidence to meet the needs of decision makers in health and social care.
