The Department of History at the University of Southampton invites applications for a three-year fixed-term, full-time Lectureship (Level 4) in 19th century British history to replace Professor David Brown, who has been awarded a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship. The post is available from 1 September 2019. 

The successful candidate will be required to teach innovative and engaging modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels on 19th century British history, including a year-long special subject, Society and Politics in Victorian Britain, a year 2 option, From Aristocracy to Democracy: Politics in Nineteenth Century Britain, and a 15-credit year 1 option to be designed and delivered by the post holder. These modules will enhance the Department’s existing teaching strengths in Modern History (for further details, see our website at: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/history/about/index.page). You should also be willing to contribute to team-taught modules within the History programme.

You will be expected to develop and carry out original, high-quality research in 19th century British history. You must have completed or be near to completing a PhD in 19th century British history and must show a developing profile of excellence in research and the dissemination of research, with field-enhancing publications either in hand or likely to be produced during the term of the appointment.  

You will also be required to undertake leadership, management and engagement activities within the Department of History and School of Humanities as appropriate to a level 4 appointment.
