Description :

This new and exciting research opportunity has arisen from Lancaster’s involvement in the Institute of Coding, particularly our work on understanding and addressing equality, diversity and inclusion issues in Computer Science, and our efforts to build a broader participation base for the subject (IoC theme 4). This work opens up the opportunity to draw on existing research to understand barriers to participation, to further develop this understanding through qualitative research and analysis techniques, and to work with colleagues on initiatives to advise on existing curricular content and develop exciting new curricular content that is inclusive for diverse students cohorts.

The Institute of Coding is a £40 million UK government-funded programme, which aims to address the UK’s advanced digital skills shortage through the promotion of innovation and industrial engagement within university education. Lancaster are proud to be part of this consortium of more than 60 universities, businesses and industry experts including IBM, Cisco, BT, Microsoft and the British Computer Society. Lancaster’s School of Computing and Communications (SCC) is seeking to appoint a Senior Research Associate to work on our theme 4 commitments that relate to equality, diversity and inclusion issues, including helping to promoting culture change in the sector, improving the pipeline of digital skills from KS5 into HE, and working on curriculum design and delivery to improve equality of opportunities and ensure a broad participation base.

We invite applications from enthusiastic individuals who have a PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline such as Computer Science. You must be able to demonstrate research experience in equality, diversity and inclusion issues, and an understanding of current barriers to broader participation in Computer Science education in HE. You should also have experience of working with qualitative research techniques for data collection and analysis, along with knowledge of appropriate ethical practices and procedures. For more details, please see the Job Description and Person Specification for this position.

The School of Computing and Communications offers a highly inclusive and stimulating environment for career development, and you will be exposed to a range of further opportunities over the course of this post. We are committed to family-friendly and flexible working policies on an individual basis, as well as the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognises and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address gender equality in higher education and research.

The Senior Research Associate position is being offered on a fixed-term basis, for a nine-month period. Applications from individuals who would prefer part-time or flexible working arrangements are very welcome.

For further information or an informal discussion please contact Dr Lynne Blair (email: l.blair@lancaster.ac.uk).

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
